Hicky’s Bengal Gazette: The Untold Story of India’s First Newspaper is a gripping story of 18th century Calcutta politics and the fate of those who became infamous because of a newspaper. Hicky’s Bengal Gazette: The Untold Story of India’s First Newspaper, Andrew Otis (Westland, May 2018) The story of James Augustus Hicky will haunt and inspire journalists the world over. He was part of a greater struggle for Enlightenment ideals of inalienable rights, ending taxation without representation, and the freedom of the Press. Irishman James Augustus Hicky is significant in this flow of events:ĭespite this long history of printing in Asia, Hicky was the first to found a newspaper, something that was printed on a regular basis and intended to convey information. Ever since the introduction of the printing press in India in the 16th century by the Portuguese Jesuits, the European colonists and missionaries used the technology to print their newsletters. In his book on origins of modern journalism in India, Andrew Otis mentions bulletins published by the Chinese, handbills by the Japanese and newsletters distributed by runners. Asia has a long history of the printing and dissemination of news.

Our understanding of the universe was greatly improved by the Copernican model, which paved the way for the discovery of planets and galaxies. Today, it is considered the most accurate description of the universe. The heliocentric model of the universe has gradually been accepted as a valid model by scientists over the centuries that followed. After changing his mind on the heliocentric model, he was placed under house arrest. Galileo was tried and convicted for heresy by the Inquisition in 1633. The Copernican theory was opposed by the Church, despite Galileo’s telescopic observations supporting it. In 1995, Miramax Films again filmed Cry, the Beloved Country, with James Earl Jones and Richard Harris in the roles of Stephen Kumalo and James Jarvis, respectively. Soon after its publication the composer Kurt Weill adapted it into a musical, "Lost in the Stars," and Paton himself worked on the screenplay for the 1951 film adaptation of the novel, directed by Zoltan Korda. Upon the publication of the novel in 1948, Cry, the Beloved Country became an instant phenomenon with near unanimous praise. According to Paton's note on the 1987 edition of the book, the novel was titled as such during a competition in which Paton, Aubrey and Marigold Burns each decided to write a proposed title and all three chose Cry, the Beloved Country. Paton gave the novel to Aubrey and Marigold Burns of Fairfax, California, who sent it to several American publishers, including Charles Scribner's Sons, whose editor, Maxwell Perkins, immediately agreed to its publication. Concerning the state of racial affairs in South Africa, the novel tells the story of the Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his search in Johannesburg for his son, who is accused of murdering the white social reformer Arthur Jarvis. He started writing the novel in Trondheim, Norway in September of 1946 and finished it in San Francisco on Christmas Eve of that same year. Alan Paton wrote Cry, the Beloved Country during his tenure as the principal at the Diepkloof Reformatory for delinquent African boys.
